WUGC County Newsletter April 2018

Watching the US Masters always seems to inspire many of us to get out on the course and the lighter evenings now give us the perfect opportunity to play after work and into the early evening. With some warmer weather around the corner our courses with start to thrive again as the full competitive season begins to pick up.

The 1st & 2nd Team had a squad day at Moseley GC on 25th March to finalise plans for the season ahead. There was a very good turn out and the team captains are now poised to select their first sides to play in the opening match of the league against Warwickshire on Sunday 6th May.

Despite the weather causing problems with some fixtures, the Droitwich Shield and Kidderminster Cup competitions have now reached their semi-final stages. It’s a tight schedule, but these matches need to be played on or by Sunday 15th April.

The 54th running of the Boys Four Counties Tournament (Staffs, Worcs, Warks and Gloucs) took place at Stourbridge GC on 5th & 6th April. The course was in magnificent condition with greens running at 11 on the stimp meter. Staffordshire took first place with our lads coming in 3rd place. It was a great overall performance by the boys namely, Jack Severn, Alex Band, James Lloyd, Aaron Bryan, James Yorke, Brandon Sarfo, Evan Lewis and Hugh Adams.  (See website for all match details.)

The County Seniors opened their season with a fine 9-6 win over our oldest rivals, Gloucestershire, at Tewkesbury Park GC on 3rd April. It was Senior Captain’s Paul Newman’s first match and he was very pleased with the attitude and commitment shown by all the players.

20 seniors and 20 boys played against each other in the first pre-season event of this kind at Droitwich GC on April 9th. They all played to the last hole and the U18 Boys (playing singles) won by 4 holes up whilst the U14 boys (playing 4BBB) won by 11 holes up. Congratulations to Harvey Jones (KNGC), who was named U14 Captain for 2018 and to Hayden Sarfo (Gaudet Luce) for playing in his first match for the U14’s.

To all clubs – Please don’t miss out on booking your 2 places (via our website) at the upcoming EG seminars on the new World handicapping System. They’re taking place on Wednesday 18th April at Kings Norton GC, starting at either 1.30pm or 5.30pm.

Finally, thank you to all clubs for their excellent attendance at the Annual Council Meeting held at Bromsgrove Golf Centre on Thursday 22 March 2018
